Registered Phenomena Code: 172
Object Class: Beta-Purple
Hazard Types: Bio-Hazard | Contact Hazard | Electromagnetic Force Hazard
RPC-172 when placed under a microscope. Note the crystalline outer layer, showing that even the bacteria do not have a protection system from the enzyme.
Containment Protocols: RPC-172 is to be kept in a hermetically sealed container, measuring 1m x 1m x 1m, the container is to be kept at a temperature of 50° C and is to be placed no less than 5m away from any electrical current/source.
The container must not be opened under any circumstance.
In the event of a containment breach, all personnel displaying stage one symptoms must be relayed to the medical ward ASAP. If patients are showing any further stage than stage one they are to be terminated and the corpse is to be incinerated.
Consider any stage 2 and above-infected personnel lost.
Experimentation is to be approved by Level-4 Senior Researchers and above
No experimentation is to take place, refer to incident Foxtrot-3
Description: RPC-172 refers to a bacterium which shows similarities to the "Morgellons Disease". RPC-172 is extremely aggressive to all biological matter and incredibly infectious in the correct conditions. Conditions of the bacterium bolster when placed into [DATA EXPUNGED] Note: By order of Global Director, nonessential conditions have been removed to avoid malicious recreation/use of the infected environment.
RPC-172's infection rate seems to have a direct correlation to its exposure to electricity. RPC-172 has 5 identified stages of infection, stage one is the only curable stage. Subjects can take anywhere from 0█ to 1█ hours to progress through any given stage. RPC-172 rapidly disables the nervous system and crystallises the rest of the body, using the blood vessels for transport. The host's life signs cease and the crystals lose form. Any crystal is to be designated as RPC-172-2. Any infected that reach this stage are classed as RPC-172-1. Crystals are coated in a fine layer of the crystallising enzyme and will grow on any biological matter it comes into contact with, leading to the rapid spread of the crystals in urban areas.
Crystals are described to be white, semi-translucent structures similar to the look of quartz, yet more transparent. Their surfaces are shiny due to the thin layer (approx 0.3 mm) of enzyme coating the crystal. Molecular analysis shows the crystal being made out of carbon, in a giant covalent structure that researchers have yet to reproduce in controlled conditions. Further analysis has shown in the presence of electricity, the crystals can up to triple in density, reasons for this change are unknown.
The enzyme appears to reconstruct carbon-based matter into a giant covalent structure identical to that of the crystal it comes from, the process of creation of the enzyme is as of yet unknown.
NOTE: researchers have stipulated it acts as a cocoon environment for a modified version of the bacterium to feed off of the carbon and create it, yet this has not been proven.
RPC-172 was first discovered when a patient was admitted to a medical clinic on ██/██/87, in ██████████, Ohio. Patient-reported major discomfort around the spinal area, X-ray scans revealed crystal-like growths along the spinal cord and part of the brain stem, at this point MST Echo-08 detained the patient and all others in contact, patient lost life signs █ hours after detainment, no others were infected. a sample of the bacterium was extracted and stored during routine blood tests.
Stage |
Symptoms |
One |
Subject feels minor discomfort as the pathogen coalesces around the nervous system, specifically the brain stem and spinal cord. |
Two |
Subject is suddenly paralysed, as the pathogen crystallises the nervous system using an as of yet unknown enzyme. Studies show that extreme pain is felt in the time the nerves are being fried, as the pain receptors are not yet crystallised. At this stage, they are only 3% crystallised |
Three |
The subjects bone structure is fully crystallised, and the pathogen moves to the skin, oddly ignoring the muscle structure completely. This is possibly due to requiring it for movement postmortem. at this stage, the subject is 32% crystallised |
Four |
The subject is over 80% crystallised at this stage, with the human structure deforming in places such as the hands and feet, and facial features become unrecognisable due to the crystalline mass covering the subject's skin. |
Five |
The subject has been fully crystallised, due to the structure of the crystals the human shape cannot be maintained and the remains fall into a pile. The crystals are coated in a fine layer of the transforming enzyme and coming into contact will cause the crystals to grow on the contacted surface. |
Experiment Log:
Item:
A piece of raw chicken breast
Test:
The chicken was exposed to RPC-172 for eight(8) hours.
Result:
Matter was infected and went through all five stages without error, remains were incinerated
Item:
A piece of raw chicken breast, sprayed with industrial-grade disinfectant
Test:
The chicken was exposed to RPC-172 for eight(8) hours.
Result:
No activity for the first three(3) hours, then infection resumed without error.
Item:
A live rat
Test:
The rat was exposed to RPC-172 for eight(8) hours.
Result:
The rat was infected as normal, life signs ceasing two hours into infection, at the stage of stage 2. Results deem stage 2 to be the point of no return.
Item:
CSD-1832
Test:
CSD-1832 was asked to expose themselves to RPC-172.
Result:
See Incident Foxtrot
Item: Sample of crystal grown from RPC-172, designated 172-C for purposes of testing.
Test: 172-C was exposed to a live electrical wire to test its effects.
Result: Monitoring showed electricity had made a complete circuit throughout the molecular structure of the crystal, pathways had no discernible pattern, other than remaining away from an area, presumed to be the centre, and resembled that of a neuron structure. Reasons for this structure are as yet unknown. After five(5) minutes of exposure, behaviour rapidly changed, with the enzyme coating growing almost twice as thick, and pooling beneath the crystal. Crystal was also observed to triple in density. Crystal was observed to have a "Slick, slimy" look, and faint pulses of what are presumed to be electrical discharges occurring from within the crystal. Observers described it as a "Mini-storm" or "Pocket Tempest".

Incident Report:
Experiment Log 1, Experiment 4.
CSD-1832 had progressed to stage 1 of the infection and was feeling discomfort and minor distress. Researchers assured CSD-1832 he had nothing to worry about. According to CSD, the feeling grew worse, leading to heightened levels of stress and obvious paranoia. CSD began attempting to break out of the airtight seal, screaming the entire time. CSD-1832 applied enough force to break the container, releasing RPC-172 into the air and ventilation system, full site lockdown was put into effect and CSD-1832 was terminated. ██ fatalities were confirmed as a result of the breach, class A amnestics were given to all personnel at the facility. Crystals were confirmed to have grown over 43% of the infected personnel before incineration teams destroyed any bacterial contagion left.
