CONTAINMENT FAILURE ALERT
SEVERITY: GAMMA-LEVEL, TIER-RED
DAMAGE ASSESSMENT INITIATED - STANDBY FOR UPDATES
DO NOT ENTER AFFECTED AREAS UNTIL CONTROL HAS BEEN REESTABLISHED
257
RPC-257, prior to the installation of Outpost-089-A.
Registered Phenomena Code: 257
Object Class: Gamma-Purple (Utility)
Hazards: Aggressive, Destabilization, Extra-Dimensional, Grouped, Immeasurable, Temporal
Containment Protocols: The mainstream and non-anomalous counterpart of RPC-257 located in Takachiho, Nishiusuku District is left as-is in order to serve as a non-anomalous tourist destination, drawing off any possible interest in seeking out the actual phenomena located █km away at [COORDINATES REDACTED]. Satellite photography must be doctored to conceal its existence as well as that of Outpost-089-A.
Under the guise of private property, no printed or digital maps are to include any trace of the unmarked road leading towards it. RPC-257 is enclosed within a fenced 1km radius as well as being fully surrounded by the walled enclosure of Outpost-089-A, both perimeters being patrolled on an hourly basis. Any hitchhikers and explorers who reach the external security booth are to be turned away, and those who somehow pass through the fenced perimeter are to be detained, threatened with police action, and released. Trespassers who somehow reach Outpost-089-A must be amnescitized before being released.
Alongside housing Authority personnel, Outpost-089-A must also be stationed with no less than three (3) Authority-sanctioned Onmyōji responsible for maintaining and inspecting RPC-257-1. Beyond the shrine disguise for the cave opening leading into RPC-257, entry into RPC-257 has been reinforced with a series of blast doors warded with numerous Shinto charms. A security checkpoint and a final reinforced blast door is installed deeper within, 100 meters before RPC-257-1. In event of a breach, personnel within the checkpoint are to seal all blast doors and evacuate stations by utilizing the emergency elevators. Should the elevators fail, personnel may utilize the automatic rappeling cables to be drawn up the shaft.
Expeditions into RPC-257-2 require the joint authorizations of Site-089's Senior Researcher Junichiro as well as Site Director Hiroi Genichi. The expedition team must consist of experienced spelunkers and at least one specialist in Japanese cryptozoology. The expedition is to wear sound-dampening equipment and utilize night vision systems. Expedition members are to not raise their voices beyond 5db and must not shine a light upon entities for longer than 5 seconds. Direct physical samples of specific entities may be taken only with written pre-authorization by Sr. Rsc. Junichiro.
Any potential reanimation incidents must result in the immediate termination of any ongoing expeditions, especially if said reanimation incident includes any form of assault upon any expeditionary member. RPC-257-1 should then be reinforced through the aid of Authority-sanctioned Onmyōji (Based on instructions gleaned from surviving Hidden Sun documents) and not to be passed through for a minimum of 1 week. The aforementioned Onmyōji are to also inspect RPC-257-1 on a weekly basis and note down any developments to its existing damage.
Description: RPC-257 is a location in the Miyazaki prefecture of Southern Japan. It is formerly the dwelling grounds of the Hidden Sun Clan, effectively replaced by Outpost-089-A post-discovery (see discovery log below). Prior to their destruction, the reclusive Onmyōji of the Hidden Sun Clan charged themselves with the caretaking and maintenance of RPC-257-1 as well as maintaining an environment of utmost secrecy, turning away and preventing all visitors from approaching RPC-257. Lastly, the clan mystics would conduct rituals to regularly ensure the capture of anomalous Japanese cryptids and their containment within RPC-257-2.
Beyond the cavern's entrance, geological analysis of the cavern walls reveal partially melted and reformed stone, aged magma formations and obsidian formations dated to have been created roughly two thousand years ago. The pattern of obsidian formation suggests brief initial exposure to an intense heat source, followed by a cooling period, then re-exposure. This phenomena is allegedly explained by a well-known legend within traditional Japanese mythology: RPC-257 was supposedly the temporary residence of a prominent divine mythological figure who self-imposed exile upon itself during a supposed altercation with similar beings.
The cave descends down a gentle incline without any anomalous traits until RPC-257-1 is reached. RPC-257-1 is a floating brass disc measured to be 0.67m in radius with a thickness of 55mm and an estimated weight of 24kg, engraved with Shinto script throughout its entire surface and suspended in the middle of the air. The air surrounding this medallion is noticeably dense, with personnel describing the need to "wade" in order to pass through and descend deeper. Based on survivor testimonials, RPC-257-1 was originally in pristine condition prior to discovery. It now sports fissures and cracks running along its surface caused by a bladed object, with extensive marring rendering at least one-third of its frontal engravings illegible.
Beyond RPC-257-1 is an anomalous zone labeled RPC-257-2. While above-ground radar charting suggests RPC-257-2 being a single large cavern, personnel observed via beacon tracking are seen to float across the open space of the cavern, then vanish upon moving past the end of the seismological charting map.
RPC-257-2 consists of a single main tunnel that continues onward, while being flanked by openings leading to side-chambers. Regardless of their size and closeness towards each other, these openings always lead into separated chambers, even if two adjacent openings should naturally result in their chambers being merged into a single room. Each chamber acts as the housing location of a variable number of a single species of anomalous Japanese cryptid entity, partially desaturated of colour and suspended in a form of temporal stasis.
Shining a light upon said beings for an extended period of time or creating prolonged loud sounds can cause these entities to slowly stir, regain colour and reanimate into a level of wakefulness. Beings who fully reanimate generally express disbelief, shock or agitation. Their movements and sounds may potentially trigger a chain reaction to stir nearby entities back into wakefulness; as such, any actions that would lead to reanimating a single instance is highly discouraged. Should the source of the disturbance be removed or suppressed, these beings are observed to slow down and revert back into suspended animation.
RPC-257-2 appears to be dimensionally in flux, and the positioning and contents of its side chambers always rearranges with each subsequent expedition. However, a trend can be observed that chambers housing smaller and more benign entities are always located closer towards RPC-257-1, while rooms housing larger and increasingly dangerous entities are located further away until the tunnel is obstructed at the very end. This method of sorting has been classified by four zones: Green, Yellow, Red and Black, with Black being the maximum distance that can be explored due to encountered obstructions (see below).
While Outpost-089-A was undergoing construction, RPC-486 was observed slinking past the security perimeter surrounding RPC-257 in its vulpine form, and ran in upon being detected. Tremors began to occur within 4 minutes of RPC-486's entering, and personnel sent to apprehend RPC-486 were ordered to abandon orders and evacuate RPC-257 instead. As personnel were exiting RPC-257, a massive quantity of human skeletal remains poured out of the cave depths and scattered into the forest. Straggling personnel caught in the way received an extensive amount of bludgeoning injuries. RPC-486 observed fleeing RPC-257 shortly afterwards, shouting apologies.
One week post-incident, injured personnel came down with signs and symptoms of acute radiation sickness. Medical investigations estimated afflicted personnel to have had exposure to ionizing radiation ranging 2-6Gy from the fleeing entity.
Escaped entity designated RPC-494.
During a sampling action where expedition researcher Ogata Tetsui was in the mist of extracting blood samples from the Yari of an inanimate human-corvid hybrid entity, the entity fully reanimates and immediately assaults Ogata, stabbing him with the aforementioned Yari. Revived instance was not able to see in the utter darkness, and gave the following demand:
"…to issue my release and return to my imminent Emperor of Japan Both Day and Night…"
The entity is successfully subdued via CQC maneuvers from fellow expedition member Emille Jackson and was observed slowing back into suspended animation, preventing its outburst from potentially reanimating its cohorts in a chain reaction. The expedition was terminated to rapidly extract Ogata who was then warded for a moderate puncture wound through the mid-left abdominal region. Rsc. Ogata has now been placed on psychiatric leave due to an abrupt experiencing of psychological instability, observed howling awake from rest, experiencing sporadic restless, angry or violent urges as well as describing a newfound hatred of corvid avians.
Rsc. Ogata's condition has been speculated to be caused by the cross-contamination of his injury with the pre-existing blood on the Yari, whose analysis indicates to be lupine in source.
Discovery Log: Under the cover of night, an Authority recon team tasked with routine surveillance of the Hidden Sun Clan for any anomalous phenomena detected screams and sounds of combat within the dojo. As the team moved closer and discussed taking action, smoke from a fire began emerging from the windows as a visibly furious winged humanoid entity left the dojo at high speeds and flew into the cave adjacent to the dojo.
As the team contacted the Authority to send fire-fighting tools and materials to be airlifted to the afflicted dojo (due to its remote location far from basic infrastructure), a loud roar could be heard echoing from the cave accompanied with the repeated ringing sounds of metal being struck with metal. This went on for a minute, followed by a brief period of silence. The hostile entity then flew out of the cave and fled the scene at very high speeds (estimated 120+km/h) in the form of a large avian creature.
The dojo of the Hidden Sun Clan mid-destruction, as recorded by recon personnel.
Photographic analysis revealing the fleeing entity behind the clan's demise and the fire.
Due to delays in scrambling fire-fighting helicopters combined with the clan's remote location, the dojo was gutted beyond repair. Arson forensics indicates the fire to have begun within an archival room and supposedly spread with unusual rapidity, with most of the documents detailing the history behind RPC-257 as well as instructions relevant to maintaining various rituals related to RPC-257 having been destroyed in the fire.
It is believed that RPC-486 and Our Grandest Director RPC-316 successfully escaped during this commotion.
Interviewed: Ashikaga Ai
Interviewer: Agent Konda Yohachi
Foreword: Interview is conducted within clan grounds while firefighting events are ongoing. Interviewee was recently rescued from the building by the recon team and is highly traumatized. Agent Konda is assisted by Emergency Medical Respondant Kaga Emiri.
Konda: State your name and position for this interview.
[ Interviewee wildly sobs, sliding off the provided salvaged chair to rock back-and-forth on the ground whilst burying her face between her knees. ]
Ashikaga: I, I, I, I, I, I-
Konda: <Speaking to self> Subject is suffering extreme post-traumatic stress disorder. Probably wrong to interview so early. Suggest to postpone-
Ashikaga: I'M ALIVE! Why?!
Konda: Subject may be experiencing survivor's guilt. <Addressing interviewee> Nevermind your name, will you be okay to talk? We absolutely need to know what happened.
Ashikaga: I don't understand! The ritual… the ritual was supposed to be perfect! Divine-wrought! Why was… that crow, the Tengu! Why was he not entrapped…? Was he too-too powerful? NO! It can't be! The cave, it, it holds far worse monsters than him!
Konda: Tell us about the entity and the cave. You must not leave anything out!
Ashikaga: A storm of death and feathers and rage! He just walked past the guards and… their staves falling apart, their bodies sliding apart! Slabs of meat! Slid apart like slabs of meat! <Shrieks, hyperventilates> …They were the lucky ones! The ones he tortured… Their screams, it's still in my head!
Konda: What did he want? What was he looking for in the cave?
Ashikaga: The seal! He wanted the seal to be broken. I heard the demands. He wanted his army back… Wanted the Tengu within to be released! But the elders, they chose death over surrender! They wouldn't decipher the archives for him! Lied to him even as he twisted their fingers back one by one, split their arms and legs apart, nails dug into their necks-
[ Ashikaga freezes, and vomits while staring blankly ahead. Continues sobbing amidst vomiting motions. ]
Kaga: Interviewee is on verge of having a panic attack. I recommend moving her farther away before resuming the interview.
Konda: Damn! Alright, I understand. Come, come on, let's just get you further away from the fire, I'm sorry for this, come on, get cleaned up, here's some water…
[ The next few minutes are spent moving farther from the burning dojo, with Respondent Kaga cleaning and Agent Konda persuading Ashikaga to drink and calm down. Redacted for brevity. Interviewee resumes speaking, starting from incomprehensible slurring. ]
Ashikaga: …lied, they lied, they lied, they lied and said all the scrolls were dedicated towards strengthening the seal, maintaining it… He burnt it all down in a rage!
Konda: How did you survive?
Ashikaga: I don't know. I… he just walked past me, like I was already dead to him. Maybe he knew I was too worthless to interrogate…? Or maybe I was too insignificant to notice, like a… a little bug…? <Resumes crying> I'm just a fresh novice! I only swept the floors most of the time!
Konda: And the other times?
Ashikaga: <Wipes face and mouth> I… I did learn some of the teachings, some scroll-work…
Konda: We found a charred safe that held some scrolls that partially survived the fire. It seems like your elders had the foresight to preserve some of their writings, but they're written in code. Can you help us restore, transcribe and translate?
Ashikaga: I… I can try, please. Let me try. Anything to take my mind off of the night… P-please…
Konda: Thank you for the assistance, we will-excuse me, please let go and not shake me.
[ Ashikaga experiences a nervous breakdown and shakes Konda repeatedly by the collar, all the while repeating "please" in an increasingly delirious manner. Konda calmly signals for Kaga to administer a prepped Midazolam sedative while holding Ashikaga still. ]
Konda: We will do everything we can, please do not worry. <Addressing Kaga> Yes, right there. <Addressing interviewee> Just calm down now, go to sleep, go to sleep…
<End Log>
Notes: Interviewee finally provides name upon calming down post-interview. She is now housed in Site-089 under a provisional Level 1 Security Clearance, assisting in the translation and interpretation of surviving documents and fragments. Depending on the scope of her duties interviewee will either be eventually retained as a full-time employee, or amnescitized and released back into the general populace.
Incomplete log of RPC-257-2 entities
Foreword: Entities are labeled by their conventional names, to reduce any confusion caused by the repeated rearrangements of RPC-257-2's layout.
The green zone contains chambers populated by diminuitive or small entities. While several species within the green zone have been traditionally depicted as possessing varying levels of malice, their attempts to harm usually involve merely inducing emotional distress in their targets via surprises and pranks. As such, green zone entities rate as a minimum of white on the lethality index, yellow at most.

Description |
Tōfu kozō |
A group of short humanoid figures resembling prepubescent boys huddled around an assortment of back-mounted carts and baskets. Opening a cart reveals an assortment of beancurd dishes. Analysis of extracted samples suggests freshness and only being recently prepared, indicating some form of temporal stasis. |
Tsukumogami |
Collective appearance resembles a landfill of everyday Japanese objects ranging in craftsmanship and make from the Edo era (1600s onward) to the late Meiji period (early 1900s). Closer inspection reveals eyes, limbs and mouths/tongues protruding out of several instances. |
Kanazuchibō (w/ Okka) |
The small entrance to this entity's miniature chamber is easily overlooked and may be either located at the ground or up to a meter high from the floor. This limbed, wormlike entity with comically large eyes shares a small niche with a different entity species(see below). Entities from separate species sleep together in pairs, suggesting a symbiotic/commensal relationship pairing. Miniature wooden mallets are scattered about the niche, but always in close reach of these entities. |
Okka (w/ Kanazuchibō) |
Miniature quadrupedal entities who shares the chamber with the above-mentioned entity. Believed to live together in a symbiotic/commensal partnership. Enlargened hollow shell-like back suggests a sound-producing function, possibly in conjunction with being struck by a miniature wooden mallet wielded by the partner entity. |
The yellow zone contains larger chambers housing larger species of entities. Many of the species within the yellow zone either present as humanoid in features, or are capable of shapeshifting to mimic humans, usually coinciding with heavy involvement and infiltration/mingling within human society. Yellow zone entities are rated a minimum of yellow on the lethality index due to their advanced sapience and/or size, and may be escalated further dependent on their inherent dangerous abilities, scope of trickery or extent of manipulation within human affairs.

Description |
Tanuki |
Entities bear a resemblance to Nyctereutes Procyonoides Viverrinus. Several male instances possess prominently enlargened scrotal sacks. Several appear frozen in various disguised forms close to their size and stature, including objects such as kettles. Disguised forms may have animal limbs and/or tails protruding from their surfaces. |
Kitsune |
Numerous instances of Vulpes Vulpes Japonica bearing multiple tails huddled together in groups possibly indicative of family units, with a diverse variety of fur colour and patterning. One empty circle amidst a group is speculated to be RPC-486's former resting spot. Fur sample taken from there matches the DNA profile of RPC-486. |
Bakeneko/Nekomata |
Felis catus entities that appear to change positions with every different visit. Several instances are noted to be frozen while in the midst of pushing each other away upon being inspected, possibly suggesting slight resistance to RPC-257-2's temporal retardation effect. A few instances possess two tails, while the majority feature a single tail. This raises questions whether Nekomata and Bakeneko are the same species of entity, contrary to conventional lore stressing them to be different subspecies. |
Kejōrō |
Female humanoid entities observed to be wearing an assortment of loosely-worn kimonos tailored to be especially revealing - low-cut skirts and upper sections that prominently highlight/accentuate legs, thighs, cleavages from a frontal perspective. Abnormally long hair causes difficulty in counting instances due to extensive visual obstruction. Some appear to be utilizing their hair to be suspended from the cave ceiling. Sampling attempt aborted as physical contact with hair caused instance to rapidly reanimate. |
Jorōgumo |
Female human-like entities possessing two pairs of arachnid legs (reminiscent of the Nephila genus) emerging from their backs. Several appear to be in the midst of weaving, with silk protruding from bellies/fingers. Others appear to be clutching musical instruments utilizing strings woven from their silk. Several appear to be chained together and display signs of physical abuse; branding, broken/missing arachnid legs, bruising. |
Nurikabe |
Initially mistaken as a lighter grey section of cave wall, with its surface possessing matching texture and hardness. Facial features can be made out on upper section. Completely blocks entry into chamber, unable to view fellow entities due to absolute obstruction of entrance. Entity was accidentally reanimated during inspection but chose to remain silent and stationary, passively observing personnel before falling back into suspended animation. Event judged as a non-incident. |
[UNKNOWN] |
Chamber is empty. A single miniature non-anomalous throne is located at the end, made of carved and polished Pinus densiflora lumber and constructed via traditional Japanese carpentry techniques. Slots and receptacles upon the throne suggest it capable of being fitted into a greater transportation vessel, such as a palanquin. Engraved on top of the throne is the following:
Here sits the King of Night, our Supreme Commander, Lord of all Human Abodes, and Master of our Parades.
The throne has been moved to Site-089 for further study. Based on the engraved descriptions, the entity may be an escaped [REDACTED BY ORDER OF THE GRAND DIRECTOR OF GLOBAL DIRECTORS AND SOLE TRUE FOUNDER OF THE RPC AUTHORITY] |
Red zone entities house species who are either humanoids depicted to possess an innately hostile streak, as well as bearing prominent hazardous properties. At the very minimum, red zone entities are to be rated as orange by default on the lethality scale, escalated with any further discoveries of their capabilities.

Description |
Tengu |
Humanoids bearing Corvid wings, the majority armed for war. Layered iron plating is commonly worn alongside crimson war masks featuring sharp elongated noses. Many are holding bows, spears, glaives, swords, numerous stained with blood. Many appear to be nursing injuries, with missing limbs and severe wounds caused by a combination of blades, arrows and animal maiming. Analysis of blood upon weapons indicates lupine DNA. Analysis of an intact war mask reveals the sharpened nose to be made of Cinnabar, a highly toxic mercury ore, as well as score lines cut into the base of the nose to ensure breakage. Judging by numerous masks featuring snapped-off noses, it is presumed the nose may be employed as a last-resort weapon to poison opponents. |
Tsuchigumo |
Large arachnid entities possessing features of Theraphosidae alongside abnormal morphology; pedipalps terminate in digitigrade claws. Spinneret array located beneath mouth, which opens into a gaping mammalian maw ringed with non-venomous fangs. Legs are heavily built and thick, with a hypothetical hydraulic pressure strength of 2000+ psi. |
Ushi-Oni |
Chamber's contents could not be observed from outside due visual obstruction by an opaque brown fume, anomalously blocked from spilling out into the surrounding corridor. Sampling of air indicates lethal levels of cyanide, methane, carbon monoxide and sulphur dioxide. Inspection of room by personnnel wearing the appropriate PPE reveals several abnormally large arachnid entities bearing bloated physiques and bovine heads, toxic air seeping from their open mouths. |
Oni |
A large number of giant-sized humanoids with red and blue skin colouration, featuring an array of horns upon their foreheads. Scattered across the room are giant clubs 2m in length and made of wood or studded iron. Sampling of blood on several clubs reveals bovine, cervid and/or human DNA. |
Gashadokuro |
A mass of human skeletal remains filling the chamber to the ceiling. Chamber is empty as of Incident 257-2, confirming it to be RPC-494. Radiation sampling of chamber reveals it to be only negligibly higher compared to baseline radiation levels. |
Greetings, authorized staff member. Kindly read and understand the entirety of this message while awaiting your generated passcode to access the only entry we have of the Black Zone.
When Site-089 was initially founded, it was with the vision to catalogue, study, and contain the supernatural. Where better than Japan, home to such a diverse array of such entities? But as the years flew by we asked where the Yōkai went, their absence resulting in Site-089's near-closure and restructuring. As it turns out one secretive clan had been doing our job far better than we had been… until now.
Now this clan lies in ruins, its only survivor an insensate novice. The elders slaughtered and their secrets are gone with the flames, all because this supposedly divine ritual did not work perfectly. So here we are now, sifting through the ashes and deciphering what little that remains, trying best to salvage the situation with a damaged seal leading to a cavern filled to the brim with Yōkai. Almost all of the Yōkai, anyway. RPC-886 and this attacker attest to that.
Which brings us back to RPC-257. I'm sure you've noticed the trend: the shallower depths house smaller and harmless creatures, while the deeper one goes the increasingly dangerous they become. Green, Yellow, Red, and now here you are at the very tip of the iceberg that is the Black Zone.
There is only ONE species documented in the Black Zone so far, because this species is always blocking the way from all deeper exploration efforts.
If our myths are to be believed, only one of these creatures have ever been killed and it took a God who resorted to trickery. And here we are with many of them.
While it is true that the true nature of many Yōkai have been misrepresented and shrouded by human misconceptions, we cannot afford any risks in the possibility that these particular creatures are just as strong as the one depicted in legend, or worse.
One way or another, for better or for worse, it seems that with the coming times Site-089 shall be fulfilling its original role after all.
The pass-code should have arrived in your inbox by now. Go ahead and use it.

Description |
Yamata-No-Orochi |
RPC-257-2's pathway terminates at a tunnel opening and a steep incline, leading to a ~50m drop down a chasm where massive multi-headed, multi-tailed reptilian entities are observed sleeping together.
Each entity is estimated to possess body lengths that vary between 80~150 meters, with tails and necks of similar lengths. A single tail grows from the back before splitting into eight separate barbed tails, whereas the base of the neck splits into eight necks bearing a serpentine face. Evidence of vegetative growth (unidentifiable trees, shrubs) can be seen upon entities' backs. The chasm is large and wide enough to observe a minimum of four entities within the visible range for night vision. Heads and tails from additional entities can be observed protruding from beyond.
All expeditions terminate at this point. It is currently unknown if the cave continues further beyond these entities. |

Oh me oh my, how Japan has changed!
What an ostentatious title that the servants of your underground palaces have come up for me. Of course I played a hand in its creation, but regardless: I love it. And such fine new kinds of food and drink, too!
The world has grown so large in these past two centuries! Perhaps I should take a flight on a great metal bird and see the sights for myself, no? And perhaps, good fortune willing, I would love for the opportunity to have a sit-down and a lovely conversation with these adorably secretive Daimyōs called the 'Global Directors'.
Ruling the world with such secrecy, behind all these shadows and all these veils? It is a pale comparison of what I normally find myself in, to be sure, but it is as they say: Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and I am simply enamored to see such homages towards emulating one such as I!
But oh, a King still has his sworn duties towards his own subjects, does he not? And so many of them, still locked away down in that dark, musty cave! I simply must find a way to free them so that we may resume the way of Yōkai and humans; night and day, Ōmagatoki and Hinode, everything returning back to how it was and how it should be.
And once that's finally done, perhaps a lovely little face-to-face with your 'Global Directors' would be next in order.
Pass the message to them, would you so kindly?
…Hm! This drink, this 'wine', is of a 'Pinot Noir' type? How many kinds are there? …Oh? You can stop writing down what I say now, thank you very much.
