The Evolution of An Artform, or how2c&rvEN1gg3rz
An image that appears after completing a crosslink puzzle from the ARG Цикады у реки Черемош ("Cicadas Beside the Cheremosh River").
Registered Phenomena Code: 296
Object Class: Gamma-Orange
Hazard Types: Incorporeal, Psychotronic, Mechanical, Immeasurable, Destabilization, Sensory, Ontological, Info-Hazard, Visual
Containment Protocols: An Authority webcrawler by the name of I/O RODGER was developed for the sole purpose of tracking and the censorship of materials pertaining to RPC-296 on video sharing and hosting websites, though specific subroutines and weights must be updated manually, as to incorporate radically divergent styles in instances of filmography. The algorithm's current list of key search terms includes:
- Blogs
- Transmedia
- Amateur documentaries
- Exploitation films
- Livestreams
- Indie art projects
- Internet hoaxes/viral marketing
- Dream journals
- Deep web search engines and extensions such as onion links
Reproductions of RPC-296 related media are to be stored in Site-088. Safe inspection must be approved by personnel with LVL-4 clearance.
Following identification of an RPC-296-Ω instance, an Authority field agent is to liaise with law enforcement appropriate to the instance's last known state and address. Internal missing person lists on Authority databases are to be updated accordingly. Catatonic individuals who fall outside of RPC-296-Ω instantiation are to be monitored and amnesticized should they recover.
Due to the minuscule participation of anonymous users on media related to targeted ARGs, RPC-296 is considered either self-containing or highly manageable for data redaction algorithms.
Senior Film Conservator & Lead Data Forensics Researcher Katie Ammes may only be contacted via LVL-4/5 encrypted email through a diskless data server. This is to keep the anonymity of the researcher's self and family intact after Incident PINK FLAMINGO. Preventative measures to restrict information breach follow guidelines under Authority Witness Protection and Detainment Programs.
Description: RPC-296 denotes a series of livestreams that occurred on various video streaming platforms, each done by an account under the moniker "how2c&rvEN1gg3rz." The entity primarily targets abandoned or inactive ARGs (alternate reality games) via highly advanced hacking software, which masks itself anonymously from the host websites, wireless encryption protocols, and antivirus networks. All known cases reveal that the affected ARG(s) will have their narratives commandeered and repurposed to fulfill interjected storylines. Multiple proxies have been traced to the proliferation of new content; information regarding the whereabouts of the entity has been inconclusive.
The selection process for web content pertaining to an ARG is unknown. By contrast, a pattern of non-anomalous rootkits consistently appears prior to RPC-296 exposure. Technical audits reveal comparative behaviors, such as similar methods of self-injection into CPU pipelines, and the removal of evidence on process and execution lists. Inconsistencies within operating systems, such as unexplained changes in target systems and improper diagnostic routines, are often indistinguishable from malicious attacks unrelated to RPC-296. Given current technological restrictions, it is impossible to definitively prevent RPC-296 incursions.
Should individuals view RPC-296 directly, they will become catatonic after 10-15 minutes. If the individual had been an active participant or "player" in the ARG, they will instantaneously vanish from their location. Instantiation causes a virulent, infohazardous, antimeme to spread to witnesses of said displacement. Thus, cognition of their last-known location is forgotten, as witnesses will attest to these events as being "gaps" or "blanks" left within their memory. Therein, a simulacrum or approximation of the individual (hereby designated RPC-296-Ω) is found within the instigating livestream. If multiple individuals view the livestream, they will experience the same phenomena.
Additionally, individuals who discovered the new trailhead(s) released by the entity since the ARG's reconceptualization increase their chances of becoming centerpieces for the livestream by 57%. Hereby designated RPC-296-α, RPC-296 livestreams will be shaped by dilemmas or negative experiences RPC-296-α had accrued prior to viewership. Livestreams will mirror or compartmentalize these struggles using props, setpieces, hidden messages (in the form of captions or ciphers), or surrealistic visual representations. As such, RPC-296-Ω performances will always revolve around RPC-296-α narratives.
Despite initial distress and fear from the initial manifestation, RPC-296-α and RPC-296-Ω instances will gradually perform predesignated roles; accommodation to specific a performance or character role is inevitable.
Addendum - List of RPC-296 sightings |
The following excerpts were compiled by Researcher Ammes and were truncated from over 48 archived ARGs. They are notable insofar as describing predictive models and patterns of RPC-296 selection; a specific focus is given towards cataloging the supposed modus operandi of each ARG as an extension of the entity's artistic expression and stylistic evolution. Consequently, this allows for I/O RODGER to operate 45% more efficiently when identifying and predicting clusters of RPC-296 affected individuals by contrast with other electronic or digitized anomalous memes.
NOTE: For the purposes of examination and peer review, all RPC-296 livestreams were recorded on secondary video formats, thus, rendering the anomalous effects impotent. More information on practical safety measures is found in the attached Psychotronic Conversion Templates Manual.
Original Title: "BodySupreme"
Previous Summary: The ARG used Facebook groups that appeared to inform users with generic bodybuilding advice. In particular, comments would allude to augmented biceps with synthetic actuators and artificial tissue. It possessed a subnarrative on the advancement of biotechnology and pharmaceutical conspiracy theories.
Altered Title: "Looksmaxing and Suicide, The Two Genders"
Current Summary: After the entity's involvement, the ARG took a radical narrative shift. The narrative centered on several individuals who used "incel" web forums. Moderators would act as "failed experiments" who escaped live experimentation from an undisclosed government facility. Forum messages revolved around user experiences: mostly revolving around topics as broad as depression, misogyny, gender theory, and accelerationism. Anonymous users posted pictures of themselves with swollen and deformed pseudo-muscles, which were the product of copious injections of olive oil.
RPC-296 Viewing: RPC-296-Ω-01 to RPC-296-Ω-02 instances manifest within the interior of a warehouse. The walls are covered in construction paper made to resemble a set-piece of forest pines and purple night. A ceramic wrapped elliptical moon hangs via a copper wire affixed to a ceiling pipe from above the instances. The floors are covered with oil, silicone implants, and numerous assemblages of black plastics. Sticky mounds made to appear as tumors cling to walls.
RPC-296-Ω-02 remarks on how distressing it is that his room is messy. RPC-296-Ω-01 holds up a red propane tank to his chest and pours gasoline over the floor and the instances. Background vocalizations, spoken in a hushed tone, repeat a variety of phrases: "it's all wrong", "need to redo it", and "the air is too fresh." The scene ends on a grain distortion as instances sit at the fringes of the camera view, and they remain still as they are immolated.
Original Title: "Inflatable Bodies"
Previous Summary: The ARG used digitized car commercial advertisements, aired in 1981, with specific emphasis on inflatable tube men. Photo galleries hosted a number of increasingly distorted, photoshopped combinations of inflatable tube men and human cadavers. Similar to the Youtube channel "Marble Hornets", the original authors set out to make several videos based on plastic humanoids with human facial features.
Altered Title: N/A
Current Summary: Several videos were released under new accounts on Youtube, each some variant of the name "h2carve". Audio spectrograms for the initial releases revealed cryptographic messages hidden in frequencies and sound graphs. Decrypted, the messages were a series of Google Maps coordinates surrounding a defunct warehouse in Selma, Dallas County, Alabama. Users accessing websites that hosted the coordinates without VPN or TOR relays were blackmailed and provoked by the entity — via stolen email and credit information — to go to these locations.
RPC-296 Viewing: The scene begins with eight operational television screens. The first, second, and third screen depict multiple angles of an ongoing struggle between RPC-296-α and RPC-296-Ω-01 instances; as the former male instance restricts the latter female instance via a belt around her throat and a translucent cellophane plastic wrapped tightly around her face. -Α begins crying in distress, staring upwards and away from -01's bloodshot eyes. -01 bloodies her nails clawing at the wooden floor panels.
The fourth screen depicts the two obscured by a cardboard cut-out made to appear like a bush while the fifth and sixth screen depict LED spotlights near the ceiling. The seventh screen depicts RPC-296-Ω-02 and -03 instances discussing dinner plans, with -02 remarking on how the lights "don't quite look the same as they do on television." High-pitched screams are audible in the background. -02 and -03 either ignore or cannot discern the source of the sound.
On the eighth screen, a large woodlands map of the Selma territory is depicted with two peepholes present. Through the peepholes, the videofeed captures -02 and -03's legs suspended in midair by unknown means, visibly jerking for several minutes before becoming still. Vocalizations similar to -A repeat the phrase "I'm sorry."
Commentary: "According to psychiatric reports, the individual RPC-296-α resembled incurred a series of physical assaults as a child.
Field agents eventually tracked down the warehouse. We had set up monitoring devices yet as RPC-296 livestreams continued, it became abundantly clear that none would enter the warehouse, nor would the interiors change to conform to set-pieces or props. However, the reoccurrence of the warehouse suggests a pathological behavior behind the entity; perhaps, it is their comfort zone — similar to serial murderers with typified callsigns and areas in which they frequent."
- Ammes
Original Title: "Babyfurs 2009"
Previous Summary: The ARG's narrative pertained to Youtube comments made by accounts with some variation of the name "babyfurs." These accounts would present startling discussions on fairly innocuous DIY videos on Youtube in 2009. Reoccurring sample comments include:
- sillysilly.powertoolll used for furnotwud.
- drill-bits-are-good-for-pushing.
- stapler diaper?
- hotglue on baby doll rub-
- nail on doggy doll nail doggy nail
Crosslinks to gore websites were present on certain comments.
Altered Title: Rainbow Children Facebook Group
Current Summary: Accounts by the name of "h2carvefur" posted multiple links on websites: namely, YouTube, Amazon, Facebook, and Twitter. Each link redirected to a Facebook group — which masqueraded as a generic LGBTQ support group — with the altered title. Various crosslinks were posted by the group. Samples included below:
- suicidehotline.com
- 911pride.org
- popthepillo.ff
- pazu.zu
- bestshaverazorblades.net
Each linked to a white page with a singular media player. On 2015/06/06, the media player flipped to an RPC-296 livestream.
RPC-296 Viewing: Hands from multiple off-screen RPC-296-Ω instances stroke and fondle a jar of emaciated butterflies, which are in a state of suspension due to a substance that pervades the interiors of the jar; it is similar in viscosity to formaldehyde. A bright, saturated star-wipe transition cuts to a black room in the warehouse. At the center is an open casket with an RPC-296-α instance wrapped in bandages. Atop the facial wraps, the name "Mellified man" (with the "man" crossed out) and two crudely drawn eyes are written/drawn respectively in an assortment of bright neon pinks, yellows, and red highlighters. A pride flag, wrapped around the neck like a noose, steadily draws the cadaver upwards.
The body dips up and down as to simulate flight whilst cheering vocalizations are heard off-screen.
Commentary: "As we are already well aware, the entity uses key characteristics of its victims as foundations for a grander theme or story. Considering this, the use of Sherman Hu's gender dysphoria seemed to mark the entity's desire to "transition" in some semblance. This hypothesis is supported by how streamlined the ARGs have become, in both artistic style and preferences the entity favors."
Original Title: 川の口、口からの悲鳴 ("the mouth of the river, the scream from the mouth")
Previous Summary: An incomplete Adobe Flash Game puzzle was to present links to several static HTML files regarding the "Murder of Junko Furuta". A heavily obscured photo was designed to pop-up on the user's browser had they achieved the right configuration within the game.
Altered Title: Цикады у реки Черемош ("Cicadas Beside the Cheremosh River")
Current Summary: A complete Adobe Flash Game puzzle with hidden artifacts in the form of image macros. These lead to various onion links; individual links presented Junko Furuta in increasingly distorted images. Malware would infect audio devices on the user's computer configuration and would output humming and vocalizations. These sounds would increase should the user see "DEEPDREAMING" become more apparent on the websites crosslinked, which is presumed to be an indicator by the entity that the user was on the right path. Sections of the final website that lead to RPC-296 exposure were blocked from users without headsets detected on their OS. After receiving instructions to plug in headphones, earbuds, or earphones, a prompt called "PROCEED" would be displayed. Afterward, all websites would link to unpublicized files of Junko Furuta in various states of undress and decomposition. Inaudible assemblages of Russian, Japanese, and a hitherto unknown language were sung in binaural frequencies.
RPC-296 Viewing: RPC-296-Ω-01 to RPC-296-Ω-17 instances manifested within a large, dark tunnel set-piece; the archways, pillars, and paper walls are draped with viscera and fecal sludge. Spotlight rays shoot out from an unknown source beyond ceiling cracks and illuminate surfaces. As the camera operator moves forward a flowing stream is audible. Eventually, the view shifts to naked -01 to -16 instances that stand erect next to red pillars. They hold large loudspeakers that obscure their chest and genitals. Their faces resemble the distortions and lacerations present on Furuta-iteration photos via anomalous means.
A noticeable red saturation colors the individuals and objects.
Low-pitched and muffled screams are heard. From the foreground, a placard written in Kanji is zoomed-in which translates to, "Low is the dream, sleep is the key." As depicted by spurious and sometimes panicked flash-cuts backward, instances of RPC-296-Ω trail behind the camera operator. Rhythmic chanting is heard in Balachkan (an old Cossack dialect); "the mouth of the river, the scream from the mouth, the door is Cheremosh, the Cicadas sing from the Other."
Severe screen discoloration becomes more prevalent and objects depicted become pixelated and blocky. The audio swells and is merged with an accompanying Japanese chant, "low is the dream, the dream is a shadow, the shadow cleaves clean as the children dream."
At the end of the tunnel is an open doorway that leads to a highway intersection. Notably, all cars are immobile as the camera operator jaywalks to the other end and continues down a dirt road for 29 minutes before it stops at a campfire. RPC-296-α is depicted on a gurney giving birth. A burning man appears from off-screen beside the fire and attempts to open RPC-296-α's cervix. A plastic doll head sprouts from her swollen labia and the camera zooms in, centering on the doll's eyes. Then, the livestream ends.
Commentary: "A startling increase in the number of users is prevalent. Emphasis was given on gender this time as all instances were female. Research into the social media interactions these women had is underway.
As with the previous RPC excerpt, the utilization of RPC-296-α is believed to have affected the story narrative or direction of the livestream. The individual RPC-296-α resembled was a recovering alcoholic who had suffered a still-birth.
Addendum, it is my belief that this current excerpt marks an escalation in the entity's production quality and outreach as the population of instances have spiked since a count of 4 or 5.
Second addendum; upon further viewing, I and my associates marked that the burning man resembled one of the instances used in the first excerpt. Indeed, facial recognition algorithms presented a 91% comparison rating. It had been a role reprisal. The agenda, whilst unclear, presents a startling notion: instances can be used freely by the entity due to unclear anomalous capabilities. Furthermore, it presents itself as a continuous question into the unknown. From where do these livestreams take place? From where are the actors stored?"
- Ammes
On 2019/06/10, an RPC-296 livestream was launched on the rabb.it media sharing platform and was shared via multiple devices. Over 1,516 laptops, home computers, phones, and servers were seized by the MST Foxtrot-88 ("Drag-n-Drop"). Reports indicate that more than 589 online users were affected and rendered catatonic from the event. MST Foxtrot-88 launched widespread investigations, liaising with law enforcement, medical staff at clinics/hospitals, and network administrators from internet providers. The following logs were taken from IRC (internet relay chat) servers and are archived for posterity.

EquestriaOC: Oh is that the new link?
Blanka: For the 3rd time, yes faggot.
Blanka: Now click it.

UwUAdministration: UwU
EquestriaOC: I for one do not condone the proliferation of pornography in this chatroom. Though I may be fairly libertarian and can condone a multitude of various of freedom of speech, I don't think pornography falls under the terms and services. Specifically, that of an orgy. We might get in trouble especially if a minor was watching the link. I would suggest you remove the link or cancel the room @SomeDumbFrogPoster.
AutismSpeaks: @SomeDumbFrogPoster hey is that you?
UwUAdministration: holy shi(edited)
AutismSpeaks: Hey Jake?
AutismSpeaks: Buddy?
Blanka: Wah wah. I'm the moralfag police and my feefees go ouchie when I see a bit of titty.
Blanka: That's what you sound like @EquestriaOC.
AutismSpeaks: Hey @Blanka?
AutismSpeaks: Doesn't he look like Jake?(edited)
Blanka: Lmao he's a self-doxxing faggot then.
EquestriaOC: That is not how I sound like.
Blanka: Porn or not, I like it. Frankly, the CCTV footage angle and shot-on-shiteo feel of the whole thing makes it feel less like some autistic shill's art project or ARG.
Blanka: Wish the camera operator knew how to zoom-in.
AutismSpeaks: Why? So you get jack-off faster at the beheading scene?
Blanka: Shut up.
Blanka: You too @EquestriaOC always trying to sound smart for a thirteen yo.
AutismSpeaks: This just looks edgy.
Blanka: It reminds me of that one time I showed you plebs Caligula.
UwUAdministration: i saw wors an bsid i <3 d caffination scn.
EquestriaOC: Decapitation scene*
Blanka: But with less production values and solely inside of an old moldy room.
EquestriaOC: What is that leaking from his head?
AutismSpeaks: Yeah but a kid actually screams that way.
EquestriaOC: And how
EquestriaOC: keep moving like that? (edited)
Blanka: So?
AutismSpeaks: How did they sample that?
UwUAdministration: mum sai its m turn on fortnit >:(((((!!!!
AutismSpeaks: I can only hope its as innocent as that.
Users in the aforementioned chat log became unresponsive after several minutes and were confirmed to be newly spawned RPC-296-Ω instances. However, an account belonging to "UwUAdministration" was hacked by an untraceable proxy IP and subsequently changed its name to "how2c&rvEN1gg3rz." The following details the interaction between the hacked account and the server it had newly joined.

Similarly hacked accounts remained active for 27 minutes. Persistent spamming logged by Discord, IRC, and other chat servers triggered I/O RODGER causing the accounts responsible to be banned permanently. Streaming services from distributed links were censored and field agents were dispersed to locations with the receiver IPs. Widespread seizure of RPC-296 recordings remains ongoing.
At 23:49:12 UTC, Katie Ammes arrived home from Site-088. Shortly after, she called an encrypted Authority hotline. MST Foxtrot-88 mobilized on the premises and found that Mrs. Ammes's two children were catatonic; their faces were severely lacerated and cauterized. It was discovered that their desktop browser had 26 tabs open; each tab linked to various livestreams (offline at the time) from a website known as twitch.tv.
Following several days of a widescale investigation, data technicians shut-down I/O RODGER and inspected its code.
Last known voice recording by Katie Ammes:
I'm glad the request to reexamine secondary media pertaining to RPC-296 for anomalous interference was approved.
I'm on the road right now, relocating to the place witness protection assigned us. My husband holds the hands of my sweethearts — like a silent movie playing somewhere far away. Haven't had the guts to look him in the eyes since we packed up our stuff.
The heart monitor serves as a brief respite - its bright-line rises, peaks, descends. Signs they're alive. That they're not all gone.
My hands still shake from when I found them in that sorry state. I wept for God knows how long…
I know it's watching. I know it's here. It hasn't left me, its eyes are everywhere now, broadcasting from a frequency from someplace unknown.
I know I might be going out of line, but I don't care anymore. There was an email sent to my personal home desktop. I wasn't aware of it - the timestamp indicated it was sent minutes before I entered the house. Under normal circumstances, that would be impossible as it was hooked to the Authority intranet. The address pointed back to a string of nonsensical letters. There was nothing in the email save for two school photos of my boys. Prop A and Prop B were scrawled underneath their faces.
For these reasons, I caution any future researcher observing RPC-296 phenomena. I don't want this to happen. Not to anyone else.
It took my baby boys. It took my baby boys.
