Containment Protocols: RPC-685 is stored in an Alpha-class anomaly containment locker in Site-089's East Light Duty Containment Wing. RPC-685 is currently enveloped in a vantablack photograph protection sheet. Making digital copies of RPC-6851 is strictly prohibited.
Tests involving RPC-685 may not be conducted without prior authorization from Site Director, Hiroi Genichi. Subjects are to be screened for signs of radiation poisoning upon the conclusion of a test. All tapes created in the aftermath of RPC-685's activation are stored in the second floor Media Analysis Center, also located in the East Containment Wing.
The photo from which RPC-685 is copied.
Description: A copy of a still from the 1954 monster movie Godzilla (1954).2 Making eye contact with the figure in the photograph transports subjects, hereafter referred to as RPC-685-1, to an area resembling Eastern Tokyo as depicted in Godzilla (1954), hereafter referred to as RPC-685-A. While the space within RPC-685-A is visible, no objects emit any wavelength of light which can be detected by human cone cells, resulting in every object appearing to be black, white, or grey. No more than one RPC-685-1 instance may exist at a single time.
The second most obvious way in which RPC-685-A differs from baseline reality is the passage of time. A subject's tenure within RPC-685-A will never exceed 96 minutes, though subjects report experiences lasting hours or even days. Should an RPC-685-1 instance survive until the end of the "runtime", they will be transported back to their previous location in baseline reality. RPC-685-1 instances alive and dead often show varying degrees of radiation poisoning. Furthermore, living instances also report significant gaps in memory between "scenes" and are only able to recall specific events which correlate to events in the movie.
Additionally, many of the constructs found within RPC-685-A resemble and function similarly to film miniatures and set pieces more than their baseline counterparts. For instance, vehicles may move in a manner more similar to radio-controlled models than actual motor vehicles. The buildings inside RPC-685-A may also display anomalous properties. Some structures lack interiors and will transport a subject to another building front when opened.
RPC-685-A is inhabited by multiple RPC-685-B and one entity labeled RPC-685-G, both of which follow the script of Godzilla. RPC-685-B are sentient humanoid entities identical to the cast members and extras who appeared in Godzilla. RPC-685-B are fluent in Japanese and will ignore attempts to communicate in other languages. RPC-685-G is a massive entity identical to the movie's titular antagonist, with a length and height of ~50 meters and a width of ~20 meters. RPC-685-G demonstrates all the abilities originally shown in the film, such as emitting a directed beam of energy from its mouth, creating tremors and tidal waves upon moving, and the passive generation of alpha, beta, gamma, and neutron radiation. The entity also demonstrates abilities not shown in the film, such as the formation of acid rain clouds following its rampage. All entities within RPC-685-A follow the script of Godzilla, and fail to react to any course of action deviating from it.
RPC-685-1 instances will replace specific RPC-685-B instances depending on certain aspects of their life, including current or present occupation, past experiences, biological sex, or personal beliefs. For instance, a member of a country's naval branch or coast guard may take on the role of Hideto Ogata, a member of the Japanese Coast Guard who functions as the film's main character. RPC-685-1 instances will be clad in the attire of their respective character and will not bring any clothing or possessions with them. The whereabouts of an RPC-685-1's possessions after they activate RPC-685's effects remains unknown, however, they do not return to baseline reality with their respective instance. This has made direct measurement of RPC-685-A with scientific instruments and recording devices impossible.
Upon returning to baseline reality, a VHS recording documenting RPC-685-1's time in RPC-685-A will appear around the vicinity of the photograph. The tape is edited as if it were the original Godzilla film, with the name of the RPC-685-1 instances being added to the main credits at the film's start. Should the RPC-685-1 instance(s) return deceased, the film will end upon reaching the demise of the final subject after which the remains of the RPC-685-1 instances shall return to their previous location in baseline reality.
Discovery: RPC-685 was discovered by Japanese law enforcement in August 1990 following an investigation into the suicide of Eji Anno within an apartment in Ise-Shima, Japan. RPC-685's anomalous qualities were discovered when an investigator inadvertedly triggered its effects. The investigator, Ken Hayabusa, returned deceased, showing fourth-degree burn marks on several locations on his body and traces of radioactive material in his bloodstream. After this incident, the investigation was transferred to the Paranormal Trafficking Surveillance Unit.3 This led to the discovery of a suicide note in Anno's bedroom. Upon the formation of MST Hotel-11, RPC-685 and related materials were transferred to Authority custody.
